20 Hour Basic Core Curriculum

 

Module 1 - Child Growth and Development

This module is designed to teach age-appropriate behaviors and culturally appropriate expectations.

Module 2 - The Importance of Play

This module is designed to teach participants how children learn through play and active involvement with their environment.

Topics:

• Learning through Play

• Play and the Young Child

• Developing Opportunities for Creativity

 

Module 3 - Planning Activities Based on Children's Needs

This module is designed to teach participants how to plan activities for a group of children based on their ages and individual needs. It introduces the role caregivers have in guiding and directing the child’s learning process.

• Schedules

• Incorporating Culture in the Interest Areas

 

Module 4 - Child Guidance: Communication

This module is designed to introduce communication skills that encourage and promote positive behaviors and open communication between children, parents and staff.

• Active listening

• Positive communication skills

• Positive Guidance

• Caregivers Role

• What It Means to Be Nurturing

 

Module 5 - Child Guidance: Guidance Techniques I

This module is designed to introduce age-appropriate behavior and appropriate adult expectations. Guidance techniques that promote positive behaviors of children in group settings are also presented.

• Child Guidance vs. Punishment

• Time Out

• Positive Guidance Techniques

 

Module 6 - Child Guidance: Guidance Techniques II

This module is designed to help participants identify a variety of factors which may influence a child’s behavior and develop strategies to work with children who exhibit challenging behaviors.

• Inappropriate adult expectations

• Children’s Basic Needs

• Causes of Problem Behaviors

• Responding to Problem Behaviors

 

Module 7 - Health: Clean and Healthy

This module is designed to teach participants how to create a clean and healthy child care environment, manage children’s medication, and encourage staff to make healthy choices for themselves.

• Hand washing

• Cleaning, Sanitizing & Disinfecting

• Diaper Changing Procedures

• Medication Management

• Accident Reports

• Food Temperatures

• Food Safety

• Dish washing Procedures

 

Module 8 - Health: Feeding and Care

This module is designed to teach participants how to plan nutritious meals, and how meal times can be used to develop social skills and good eating habits.

Topics:

• Nutrition

• Meaningful Mealtimes

• Ideas for using Multicultural Recipes

 

Module 9 - Safety: Child Safety

This module is designed to help participants identify signs of child abuse and neglect and understand proper mandatory reporting procedures. This module will also help participants understand licensing standards, create safe environments and plan for emergencies.

• Licensing Regulations in Child Care

• The “New” Child Care Licensing Guidebook

• Supervision of Children

• Mandatory Reporting Law

• Creating Safe Space 

 

Module 10 - Licensing, Professionalism and Communication with Parents

This module is designed to be taught as the final training session for the 20 hour STARS Basic Child Care Training. It addresses licensing standards, professionalism and communicating with parents.
