STARS 20 Hour Basic Training Online

Training Curriculum Acknowledgements

This training program has been adapted from the model curriculum for the Washington State Training and Registry System (STARS) 20-hour basic child care training that is required for all child care center lead teachers, program supervisors and directors.

It has been revised and is current to reflect new research and feedback from educators, trainers, and updated WACs. Its purpose is to provide a foundation of basic core knowledge about child development, guidance and behavior, health, and safety.

The curriculum presents an introduction to the important content areas of early childhood education. It is based on the Child Care Center Licensing Guidebook 2nd ed. (2006). DEL-LC 2001 (x) 10/06; and the School-Age Companion Guide; and includes the recommended learning outcomes for the STARS center based initial training. The curriculum has been written to be presented in ten two-hour modules.

This training meets the 20 hour basic requirements for:

  • Mixed Age Center Based Child Care

  • Family Child Care

  • School-Age Programs

The 20 Hour Basic curriculum reflects the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) position that programs designed for young children should be based on current knowledge and shared beliefs about what constitutes quality early childhood education. The curriculum also reflects a clear commitment regarding the rights of young children to respectful and supportive learning environments (Bredekamp and Copple, 1997).

Every effort has been made to make the training consistent with multicultural, anti-bias, and culturally relevant principles.
