STARS credit is not issued for first aid/CPR or HIV/AIDS Bloodborne Pathogens Courses. The training requirements for AIDS/HIV and Bloodborne Pathogens courses are in addition to STARS training requirements.

Who must have human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and bloodborne pathogen training?

HIV/AIDS and Bloodborne Pathogen is required for all staff (WAC 170-295-1110). The training must be taken from a certified trainer or organization and the training certificate kept in the staff file. This can be an online class, but the training must state that it covers HIV/AIDS/Bloodborne Pathogens. A staff person needs to take this HIV/AIDS/Bloodborne Pathogen training only once to meet licensing requirements.

Labor and Industries requires all staff to take a Bloodborne Pathogen training annually. Staff should receive this annual training by a center staff person who has taken the HIV/AIDS and Bloodborne Pathogen certified training and who is familiar with your center’s Bloodborne Pathogen plan and practices. If a staff person takes an outside Bloodborne Pathogen class, they must still be trained on your center’s Bloodborne Pathogen plan and practices. Check with your licensor or DEL health specialist for a sample Bloodborne Pathogen plan.
